BROWNSVILLE, Texas, May 28, 2021 – The Brownsville Navigation District (BND) proudly announces the recipients of the 2021 Port of Brownsville Scholarship program, aimed at helping deserving students pursue a higher education and career dreams.
Thirty-two local high school graduating seniors will receive $1,000 scholarships to help them continue their education. The scholarship winners – selected for their academic performance, community involvement, extracurricular activities, and work experience, as well as for essays penned as part of their applications – attend 16 public and private high schools in the Brownsville and Los Fresnos area. The selected students will receive their scholarships when they enroll in college or technical school.
“The commitment to our community is stronger than ever,” said BND Chairman Sergio Tito Lopez. “The port is proud to invest in these talented young men and women as they continue to pursue their aspirations of becoming the leaders of tomorrow. On behalf of the BND Board of Commissioners and port staff we extend our congratulations to all.”
The scholarship program, created in 2020 by the BND Board of Commissioners, has awarded $64,000 benefiting 64 high school students attending schools within the navigation district.
