BROWNSVILLE, Texas — December 11, 2024 — The Port of Brownsville proudly announces Texan Cement as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Chairman’s Award. Brownsville Navigation District Chairman Esteban Guerra presented the award to Ricardo

Viejo García, from Cementos Tudela Veguín, parent company of Texan Cement, at the annual Customer Appreciation Luncheon held Dec. 10, at the Ambassador Event Center in Brownsville, Texas.

This accolade recognizes exceptional companies that exemplify the Port of Brownsville’s core values of good corporate citizenship, economic development, safety, and job creation.

“Texan Cement has demonstrated remarkable leadership in the construction and infrastructure sectors while significantly contributing to the growth and prosperity of the Rio Grande Valley,” said Brownsville Navigation District Chairman Esteban Guerra. “Their investments and commitment to sustainability are paving the way for a brighter future for our community.”

Part of the Cementos Tudela Veguín family, under the stewardship of Masaveu Group from Spain, Texan Cement began dry bulk handling operations at the port in 2017, importing Portland Cement to meet growing demands of the domestic market. The company is in the process of shifting its operation from a regional distribution center importing cement to a production facility capable of making 400,000 tons annually of Portland cement at the port, ensuring a consistent supply for South Texas. This will bring over 70 well-paying jobs to the region.

The $42 million investment, which includes cutting-edge bulk handling equipment and increasing storage capacity from 14,000 to 40,000 tons, is in addition to their initial $10 million commitment. The company’s focus on sustainability includes integrating green technologies, reducing transportation emissions, and advancing low-carbon solutions.

Since 2017, the Brownsville Navigation District has proudly recognized outstanding companies at the Port of Brownsville with the Chairman’s Award. The annual recognition highlights the achievements of port tenants in the areas of business growth, leadership, job creation, customer service, innovation, safety, and community involvement.
